Smoking is one of the more harmful things that someone can do to their body. The smoke infects the lungs and shortens lifespans.

According to the American Cancer Society’s website, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women and the leading cancer death is lung cancer. One in four cancer deaths come from the lung.

Sarah Foster, with the American Cancer Society, says more about this day.

About 40 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the world.

Foster also says the fight has to be taken one day at a time to quit smoking.

The Society is here to help all cancer patients, including lung cancer patients. To get help to stop smoking, call Quitline Iowa at 1-800-QUITNOW to enroll in a free smoking cessation program. Call 1-800-227-2345 for free tips and tools.
