Mason City, IA – A Charles City woman who had been running a day care in Mason City has entered a plea for her charges. The case is being heard in the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse.

31-year-old Tawny Symonds was originally charged with child endangerment, assault and felony second-degree sexual abuse. She has entered an Alford Plea for the child endangerment charge. An Alford Plea does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the state can likely prove the charge. Symonds has requested that the other two charges be dropped.

Symonds is being accused of victimizing one of the children at her day care, and allowing someone in the day care which violates the Iowa Department of Human Services’ safety plan.

She was arrested in December of last year. Symonds is facing up to five years in prison and will have to pay a $7,500 fine. The trial restarted Monday.
