New Hampton, IA – The Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton is a “safe haven” for people who don’t think they can be parents. This law allows for people to drop off babies with no questions asked.
Jenny Monteith, public relations coordinator at Mercy, says how this law works.
Mercy is not the only place that is a safe haven in the area. Other facilities and organizations also welcome in newborns.
Questions might be asked at the drop off, but it is not a requirement for the parents to respond. The child will still be accepted.
Other options to consider if a parent can’t handle the responsibility of being a guardian are to contact physicians to help out with adapting to having a baby or contact the Department of Human Services.
If a parent does exercise this law, the facility will contact law enforcement, human resources and will be put in foster care.
