Flu Season is Almost Upon Us

New Hampton, Iowa – The season is about to change, and with fall comes another season as well. Flu season.

Kathy Babcock, public health administrator for Chickasaw County, says that flu season usually gets started in October or November.

The season tends to last through January but last year there was a late breakout and the season extended until May. Babcock says that they do put on walking clinics where you can get your flu shot.

The cost of these vaccinations has fallen to $30, and if you have Medicare A or B, that price could be covered. Babcock says that this shot needs to be done yearly to help the immune system in your body.

Babcock is also involved with the walking school bus program. This helps kids get to and from school with the assistance of adults.

The program runs five days a week and has three routes. Over the whole program, 30-32 kids are involved. In order for children to be a part of this, parents must sign a permission slip.
