In a game heard right here on 951 The Bull last night, the New Hampton Chickasaw baseball team was in Cedar Falls for a Class 2A Sub-State Final against Denver. The Cyclones struck first with three runs in the top of the third inning on just one hit. New Hampton would come back to tie it up in the bottom of the fifth inning as Wyatt Stochl, Carter Stochl, and Ryan Gorman all crossed home plate. Denver would regain the lead right back with another unearned run in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead which would be the way the game ended as the Chickasaws saw their season come to a close. Carter Stochl battled control problems on the mound as he finished the night with two walks and three hit batsmen, but he also gave up no earned runs, just one hit, and struck out eight. New Hampton finishes their season with a record of 32-3 and a third straight Northeast Iowa Conference title.
In a game heard on our sister station KCHA last night, the Charles City Comet softball team opened up their 2017 Class 4A State Tournament run in Fort Dodge against Fairfield. Charles City took an early lead as Ciana Sonberg blasted a home-run in the bottom of the first, the Comets would add another run in the frame and in the bottom of the second, they would score again and hold a 3-0 lead after two. Fairfield wouldn’t go away easy though as they tied it up in the top of the third with three runs of their own. Tayler Schmidt would give the Comets the lead back with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth and the score would remain 4-3 until the sixth. The Trojans tied it up at four with a run in the top of the sixth, but Shantel VanHauen delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to give Charles City the 5-4 win. The Comet softball team improves to 33-6 overall this season and will play in the State Semi-Finals tomorrow afternoon against Ballard.
In other summer playoff news from around the area, the Waverly-Shell Rock baseball team used a five run fourth inning to get a 6-3 lead over Decorah on Monday night. They were able to hold onto the lead and win 6-5. The win gives them the Class 3A District 5 Championship. Waverly will now play in the Sub-State Final tonight against Dubuque Wahlert at home. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
