The Bull Sports Report (7/18)

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union kicked off their softball state tournament in Fort Dodge yesterday with Classes 1A, 2A, and 3A holding their State Quarter-Final games. The top seed in Class 1A, the Kee High softball team rolled to an opening round win as they defeated Montezuma 18-1. Kee High improves to 36-2 on the season and they will take on Westwood in the Semi-Finals on Thursday. Also in Class 1A, the three seed Clarksville was able to defeat Belle Plaine 9-8 to advance to the Semi-Finals. The Indians needed two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead in the game and then were able to hold on for the win. Clarksville will now play Sigourney on Thursday at 7:30.

The Charles City Comet softball team will begin their 2017 State Tournament tonight with a Class 4A Quarter-Final match-up with Fairfield. The Comets come in as the seven seed in the tournament and will take on a Fairfield team that they do not know much about. Head Comet softball coach Brian Bohlen says even though Fairfield is a bit of a mystery, his team has done a good job of in-game adjusting this season.

Coach Bohlen expects another large following by the Charles City faithful and he was quick to say thank you to the community for their continued support.

The Comets come into tonight’s game with a record of 32-6 while Fairfield has an overall record of 33-9. You can tune into our sister station, 959 KCHA, for this game tonight with a pre-game at about 4:40 and first pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.

The New Hampton Chickasaw baseball team will be in a Class 2A Sub-State Final tonight trying to earn the program’s first trip to the State Tournament. The Chickasaws come in top-ranked in Class 2A and they enter with a record of 32-2 while Denver comes in at 17-14. These two teams met during the regular season back on June 8th in Denver and the Chickasaws won the game 8-4.
