The Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union opened up its 2016 Regional Volleyball Tournament last night with Classes 1A and 2A holding opening round matches. The Saint Ansgar Saints volleyball team hosted Nashua-Plainfield last night in a Class 2A Region 6 first round match-up. Saint Ansgar won the first game 25-18, the Saints won game two 25-13, Nashua was able to take game three 26-24 and then Saint Ansgar took the fourth game 25-13 to take the match three games to one. Sierra Fisher had 8 kills to lead Nashua and Britney Holthaus had 17 digs for the Huskies. Nashua finishes their season with a record of 5-20.
The Turkey Valley Trojan volleyball team hosted Riceville last night in an opening round match of the Class 1A Region 6 tournament. The Trojans were able to earn the sweep three games to none by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-15. Emily Busta led the Trojan offense with 14 kills, and as a team the Trojans had 12 ace serves. Turkey Valley volleyball improves to 9-21 on the season and they will play in the Regional Quarterfinals on Monday at Tripoli.
Both the Sumner-Fredericksburg and South Winneshiek volleyball teams received first round byes in their respective Regional Tournaments. Sumner-Fred will open up their postseason at home on Monday in a Class 2A Region 7 Quarterfinal against Maquoketa Valley. South Winn will get their first taste of the postseason as well as they will host MFL-Mar-Mac on Monday night in a Class 2A Region 6 Quarterfinal.
The New Hampton Chickasaw volleyball team will open up postseason play tonight at home in a Class 3A Region 6 Quarterfinal against Crestwood. The Chickasaws went 3-0 this season against the Cadets as they beat them three games to one at home in the Northeast Iowa Conference regular season, were two games to none winners over them in the Waukon tournament and then beat them two games to none at the NEIC tournament last Saturday. New Hampton volleyball is 27-10 overall this season while Crestwood comes in at 15-17. You can tune into this match right here on 951 The Bull starting with a pregame at 6:45. The North Fayette Valley volleyball team will also be in a Class 3A Region 6 Quarterfinal tonight as they will host Waukon. The Tiger-Hawks defeated Waukon two games to none at the Cresco Tournament on September 10th in their only meeting of the season. North Fayette is 19-14 overall this season while Waukon comes in with an overall record of 9-23-1. First serve from West Union will be at 7pm.
