Arson Arrest Made in Oelwein Fire

Buchanan County, IA – A house fire took place in Oelwein late in January. The man responsible for the fire has been arrested and charged.

19-year-old Hayes Kern of Winthrop had allegedly set fire to the structure on Jan. 21. He was seen driving a stolen car earlier that day, and would be arrested later just north of Springfield, Illinois. He is currently being held in Buchanan County Jail.

Kern has received one count of first-degree arson and third-degree burglary. He also had a list of charges that were dismissed in Illinois.

He will be transferred to the Fayette County Jail and is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.
