The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union finished up their basketball season over the weekend with State Championship games on Friday and Saturday.  In the Class 1A Final, Turkey Valley played Springville on Friday in a re-match of last year’s State Title Game.  Points were hard to come by early as the score was 6-3 after the first quarter.  Springville extended their lead to six points at halftime and then were up by 14 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans would win the quarter, but lost the game by a final score of 45-36 to finish in second place for the second consecutive year.  Shelby Reicks and Sadie Nymeyer each had 13 points in the loss for Turkey Valley as the Trojans end their year with a record of 24-3.  Reicks was named to the Class 1A All-Tournament Team for her efforts last week in Des Moines.  In the 2A Championship, also on Friday night, Western Christian defeated Treynor 51-48 to claim the title.  In Class 3A, Pocahontas Area blew out Siouz Center 61-38 on Saturday.  North Scott defeated Marion 50-42 in overtime to win the Class 4A Championship, and in 5A it was West Des Moines Valley winning over Cedar Falls 71-59.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association will begin its boys basketball state tournament today with Quarter-Finals being held in Classes 1A and 2A.  The Class 1A games consist of North Linn Troy Mills taking on Maple Valley, Gladbrook-Reinbeck vs. Lynneville-Sully, Grandview against West Hancock and Saint Mary’s up against New London.  The Class 2A Quarter-Final games today will be Western Christian vs. South Hamilton and Cascade will take on Camanche.  All State Tournament games will be played at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In a game heard right here on 951 The Bull yesterday, the Iowa Hawkeye Men’s Basketball Team was able to cap off their regular season with a win yesterday at home over Penn State 90-79.  The Hawks are peaking at the right time of the year as they have now rattled off four wins in a row and finish their season with a record of 18-13.  Iowa earned the 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament with league record this year of 10-8.  They will open up their tournament play against Indiana on Thursday night in Washington D.C.

In a game heard on our sister station KCHA on Friday night, the Iowa State Cyclone Men’s Basketball Team concluded their regular season with a Big 12 match-up against West Virginia in Morgantown.  It was a one-point game at halftime as the Cyclones trailed 43-42 at the break.  Iowa State hit a rough patch to begin the second half and couldn’t climb out of that hole and lost by a final score of 87-76.  The Cyclones finish their season with an overall record of 20-10 and they finish the Big 12 season in fourth place with a league record of 12-6.  They will take on Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Tournament Quarter-Finals on Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

The University of Northern Iowa Panther Men’s Basketball Team competed in the Missouri Valley Conference Basketball Tournament over the weekend.  The Panthers were defeated in their first game of the tournament by Missouri State b a final score of 70-64.  They finish their season with a record of 14-16 and they will wait and see if they get a berth into a post-season tournament.
